The Travelling Teach

Khao Sok National Park was our first stop heading towards the south of Thailand. Once we got settled away, we quickly made plans to go tubing down the river. It was such a great time! Lots of laughs and some bumps and scrapes. Reminded me a lot of tubing down the Humber River, just with different scenery - there were snakes and monkeys in the trees. After tubing, we decided to go on a night safari through the woods by foot. It wasn’t what I expected. There were a lot of geckos and some other insects. We did see what looked like a big weasel though, which was neat. The next day we went on a hike through the park then hopped on a bamboo boat to go to a hidden lunch spot. To cool off, we spent the afternoon swimming and learned the “real way” to wear a life jacket, according to the Thais.  The following morning we went to visit the elephants again. My first few days in Thailand, I rested. Continuous travel can be exhausting at times, so I was grateful for these few days to recoup. I did however wander around Bangkok and found some cool architecture, markets and a cute breakfast spot.  After meeting my new group, we travelled north to Sukhothai. This was an absolutely gorgeous area that we explored by bike. Sukhothai was actually the old capital of Thailand, so it was interesting to see the history there - so many temples! As luck would have it, the lantern festival was also on when we were there. It was one of the coolest things I have experienced. The lanterns, the elephants, the food, the music and the dancing was absolutely incredible. If you ever have a chance to go, I would highly recommend it.   From Sukhothai, we drove to Thailand’s first elephant hospital. Our last stop in Vietnam was Halong Bay. This place did not disappoint! It was absolutely stunning. We sailed across the bay and stopped to see another one of the massive caves that seem to be so prevalent here. Afterwards we went to a swimming area. It was a little crowded so we decided to spend the  time relaxing on the sand, then returned to the boat to see the sunset. Usually the sky is so hazy here that there isn’t really a sunset/sunrise to be seen. However that night, we caught a little glimpse of magic.   The three weeks went by so fast that I don’t think any of us were really ready for goodbye. But unfortunately all good things have to come to an end. Vietnam, thank you for teaching me so much about the strength and kindness of the human spirit.
